Summer is coming and so too the SUN!!

Recently, The Canadian Cancer Society along with Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and Princess Margaret Hospital produced a guide for Chiropractors to refresh and update information of skin cancer. Please be safe when it comes to the sun.

We wanted to give you a gentle reminder of how to guard against the sun.

  1. COVER UP.....By wearing long clothing, brimmed hats and UV blocking sunglasses. The sunglasses should be labelled to block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays or UV absorption up to 400 nm, Meets ANSI UV Requirements
  2. WEAR SUNSCREEN......Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher EVERY Day, even in the winter. Apply approximately 2 tablespoons or a palm full of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going out into the sun.

Some facts about Sunscreen:

  • The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) system is not a linear system as commonly believed. The SPF number refers to the number of minutes a person can spend in the sun before getting the equivalent of one minute of UVB rays.

What number should you use?

  • SPF 15 sunscreens filter out about 93% of UVB rays and after an hour in the sun the person has the equivalent of four minutes of protection free sun exposure.
  • SPF 30 sunscreens filter out about 97% and after an hour the equivalent exposure is only two minutes
  • SPF 50 sunscreens fileter out about 98% and SPF 100 sunscreens filter out about 99%

Be especially disciplined in wearing sunscreen near water, snow and sand because of the UV ray reflection!
