Graston Technique® is a unique instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy that effectively breaks down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. Scar tissue and fascial adhesions are the result of blunt force trauma, sprains and strains, and repetitive motion disorders. Blunt force trauma is when there is direct impact to a specific region of the body; this can result in a laceration and/or bruising. Sprains and strains occur when the ligaments of a joint or the muscles associated with a joint are stretched beyond their anatomical limits and may be partially or torn completely. Repetitive motion disorders are injuries of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems that may be caused by repetitive tasks, forceful exertions, vibrations, mechanical compression (pressing against hard surfaces), or sustained or awkward positions1.
Scar tissue and fascial adhesions limit the range of motion of the affected area/s, and in many instances causes pain, which prevents the patient from functioning as he or she did before injury. Graston Technique® utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation2. The beveled edges along with their concave/convex shapes allow the Graston Instruments to hold to the various contours of the body. The Graston Technique® Instruments, much like a tuning fork, resonate in the clinician's hands allowing the clinician to isolate adhesions and restrictions, and treat them very precisely. Since the metal surface of the instruments does not compress as do the fat pads of the finger, deeper restrictions can be accessed and treated compared to other manual therapies. Graston Technique® has been clinically proven to have quicker and better outcomes for various conditions including: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Rotator Cuff Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow, Shin Splints, Low Back Pain, Neck Pain, and Fibromyalgia. But Graston Technique® is not a standalone treatment; the protocol includes icing, stretching and strengthening exercises. This protocol in conjunction with Chiropractic adjustments will aid our patients achieving their health goals.
