Is the computer making you sore?

Today workers spend and average of 4-6 hours a day at the computer. Although computer design has improved, computer related injuries make up approximately 30% of all visits to a Chiropractor and MD offices.

Proper set up at your desk:

  • Screen at eye level with head forward (ears over shoulders).
  • Seat that allows knees at 90 and hips at 90 and the ability for easy mobility of chair (feet flat on floor).
  • Sit up on sitbones, avoid slouching.
  • Keyboard at 180 degrees (straight), avoid flexion or extension of wrists.
  • Sit on an exercise ball intermittently (exchanging with your chair) throughout the day.
  • Ensure proper/enough lighting to avoid eye and neck strain.
  • Mouse with your left hand.

Research tells us that the most detrimental component of computer work is long periods of keying or working at the computer and not moving, therefore not circulating the blood. This is called static loading. So get up and move!! See us if you're having aches and pains and encourage your co-workers to have good ergonomics too!

Common conditions of office workers:

  1. Neck pain
  2. Headaches
  3. Wrist or carpal tunnel syndrome
  4. Shoulder pain
  5. Back pain
  6. Numb legs

What you can do:

  1. Do stretches daily to focus on hip flexors and scapular muscles (trapezius and rhomboids).
  2. Set your work station up properly.
    Invest in a good chair.
  3. Drink 8-10 glasses of water per day.
  4. Set your timer to move around every 40 minutes.
  5. Don't let small aches turn into big pains,
    get treatment early.
  6. Use a lumbar ergonomic support.

Our chiropractors are trained in ergonomics and teach the information daily in their practices. They have worked with companies such as Harrison Young, Raised Eyebrow and Jarislowsky-Fraser Ltd.
